Video Game Tales of Kenzera: ZAU is inspired by African Mythology and Storytelling
Tales of Kenzera: ZAU, an online role-playing game inspired by African mythology and storytelling, is making waves with its unique blend of action-adventure gameplay and cultural references. Created by Kenyan-British actor Abubakar Salim, known for his roles in HBO’s Raised by Wolves and Assassin’s Creed Origins, the game was released in April this year on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S through his Surgent Studios.

The game's protagonist, Zau, embarks on a mission to capture the spirits of three monsters and offer them to Kalunga, the God of Death, in hopes of resurrecting his father. The game, characterized by its non-linear exploration and progression, carries a personal connection for Salim, who created it partly as a way to process the loss of his father, the man who introduced him to gaming.
The game was recently reviewed by Johannesburg-based writer and filmmaker Tsogo Kupa in Africa Is a Country. Kupa highlighted the complexities of the worldbuilding and the distinct storytelling approach that sets the game apart. While acknowledging the game's controversies, Kupa noted its immersive nature and the meaningful nods to African mythology.
He praised the use of cultural references, such as the tokoloshe (a mischievous water sprite from Zulu folklore) and the Ndebele patterns adorning the game’s environments, which evoke a rich sense of African heritage. Kupa also noted that while the game draws from a variety of cultures, blending influences in a way reminiscent of Wakanda, it remains an enjoyable and culturally significant experience.
For those interested in African mythology or gaming, Tales of Kenzera offers an opportunity to engage with a powerful narrative rooted in African storytelling, whether or not they're seasoned gamers.
