What are you going to read in 2023? Here are some standout titles
It’s the year of the home-grown book. Australian books in all genres feature prominently in publishers’ highlights for 2023. The pandemic is fading as a popular topic, but we’re still preoccupied with climate change, racism and sexism. It’s notable how many books, particularly life stories, are written by women and non-binary people.

There’s a strong Indigenous theme to outstanding fiction in 2023, including epic novels from two Miles Franklin winners. Melissa Lucashenko’s Edenglassie (UQP, October) spans five generations; Alexis Wright’s Praiseworthy (Giramondo, April) “pushes allegory to its limits … a fable for the end of days”.
