YouTube Shorts to be extended to 3 minutes
YouTube is set to extend the length of its Shorts videos to 3 minutes, a move that brings the platform into direct competition with TikTok and Facebook. Starting October 15, the maximum duration of YouTube Shorts will increase from the current 60-second limit to 3 minutes, giving creators significantly more time to craft richer and more detailed content.
This change has been highly anticipated by content creators, who have expressed a desire for more flexibility in sharing complete stories without the need to trim down their videos to fit the restrictive 60-second window. Previously, any video longer than a minute on YouTube was categorized as long-form content. But under the new rules, all videos under three minutes will qualify as Shorts, providing creators with an expanded platform to engage viewers and participate in YouTube’s unique revenue-sharing model for short-form videos.
With this update, YouTube is not only increasing competition with TikTok, which has allowed 3-minute videos since 2021 and now supports videos up to 60 minutes, but also promising enhancements to its recommendation system. These improvements are designed to better showcase longer Shorts videos and boost engagement.
In addition to increasing video length, YouTube is implementing new features inspired by TikTok’s format. One such feature is the introduction of a template system, accessible through the 'Remix' button, enabling creators to quickly adopt popular trends. Additionally, YouTube has launched a Shorts trending page on its mobile app, allowing viewers to easily discover viral content specific to their country. This suite of changes underscores YouTube’s commitment to evolving Shorts as a major platform for creators and viewers alike.
