Yukio Edano Plans Comeback to Head CDP in Next Party Election
Yukio Edano, the former president of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDP), is gearing up for a return to the top post, three years after stepping down due to the party's disappointing performance in an election. According to sources, Edano, now 60, has conveyed his intention to run in the CDP’s presidential election scheduled for September.
Edano recently met with Hirotaka Akamatsu, a significant figure in the party and the leader of its largest faction, Sanctuary, to discuss his candidacy. Akamatsu, despite retiring as a lawmaker, remains a key influencer within the CDP. Edano is likely seeking the Sanctuary faction's endorsement to secure the 20 nominations needed to officially enter the presidential race.
The forthcoming election is crucial as the CDP’s newly elected president will be considered a potential candidate for the prime ministership in the Lower House election, which could take place as early as the end of this year. Edano's main competition appears to be the current CDP President Kentaro Izumi, who is also inclined to seek re-election. Given Edano's strong political background, having been elected 10 times as a Lower House member from the Saitama 5th District, he is expected to be a formidable contender.
Edano's bid to reclaim leadership signifies his continued influence and commitment to the party, setting the stage for a competitive race that could shape the future direction of the CDP.
