Nowadays, low-budget sci-fi comedies are experiencing a renaissance in Hungary. Such was the case at the Space Picnic , which, despite its kind intentions, was not an undivided success among critics and spectators alike. BenÅ‘ Baranyi's first feature film, Zanox - Risks and Side Effects , also appealed to the audience. Filmed in Dunaújváros, Zanox is a teen comedy drawn to a stenciled time-loop story, which is not only daring to take on bold draws, but also one of the funniest Hungarian comedies of recent years due to its ironic humor.
Dunaújváros is a county town located in the Central Transdanubia region, the founding of which is connected to the Rákosi era. In 1949, the Central Executive of the Hungarian Workers' Party decided to build an iron and steel plant and a related housing estate, which was originally planned to be built not in today's Dunaújváros, but in the vicinity of Mohács. However, due to the deteriorating Hungarian-Yugoslav relations, they had to find a new location to implement the investment, and so the choice fell on the area of ​​today's Dunaújváros. The first socialist metropolis was born under the name of Stalin. From today's point of view, the characteristic features of the previous system can be observed in the settlement, from the socialist town hall and blocks of flats to the Intercisa Museum, which was formed from a former party house. Dunaújváros is special not only because of its role in the socialist system, but also because the settlement became the venue for the introduction of BenÅ‘ Baranyi. The filmmaker revealed that he chose the city as the location of his work because Dunaújváros offers a lot of exciting visual solutions. The mystery of the unlit forest on the banks of the Danube, the huge bolts in the forest and the authentic atmosphere of the panels form the basis of a truly unique visual world.
However, the director-screenwriter did not get by with the special atmosphere, but also tried to come up with a sufficiently absurd story that fits the world of the film. It worked. Homemade pálinka of dubious origin, mixed with the experimental sedative Zanox, allows time travel, but this time its user can travel to the past, not the future. Misi (ElÅ‘d Bálint), the retreating high school student, accidentally tries the cocktail, so she finds herself again on her graduation morning. The boy recognizes the possibility of the strangeness and tries to get closer to the chosen girl (Lili ErdÅ‘s) while also having to prevent a murder. But for a better end, everything has to go hand in hand, except that the homemade brandy needed for time travel is running out quickly, and even more so complicates the protagonist's not-so-simple situation.
So the basic situation is not to invent the Spanish wax, as we have already seen in many films how the protagonist, realizing his particular situation, tries to steer his own, tangled life in a better direction (e.g. Until indefinite times , Butterfly Effect ). However, what distinguishes BenÅ‘ Baranyi's work from this Hollywood scheme is that she dares to be truly Hungarian. Authenticity is evident in the little details, such as the brandy that serves as the fuel for time travel, the (former) socialist city where the film takes place, the techno parties in the ruin pub and the musical background of Ricsárdgír , and the way the grandmother fucks her granddaughter.
However, they also give Zanox a nostalgic charge, to which only the furniture of the past century in the school classrooms or the picture tube TV at Grandma's is attached.
