Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Guide – 5 Important Tips for Starting Out
We are well aware that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is a game where the greatest delight stems from uncovering discoveries on your own, much like its predecessor, Breath of the Wild. However, when embarking on your journey through Hyrule, it is inevitable that you will make numerous mistakes and find yourself regretting not knowing certain things. This guide aims to provide you with valuable tips to prevent real-life frustrations.
Having played through Tears of the Kingdom extensively, we discovered some habits that proved immensely helpful early on, and we are excited to share them with you. Just like Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom is a game that continues to unveil new surprises even after completing the main story. Consequently, we will keep updating this article as we stumble upon new insights.
Keep your Breath of the Wild save file ready for acquiring horses

You must have played The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which attracted an impressive player base of around 30 million individuals. Chances are high that you progressed far enough to capture and stable a horse or two, maybe even three or four.
If that's the case, ensure that your Breath of the Wild save file is accessible on the Nintendo Switch you're using to play Tears of the Kingdom. Over the years, you might have upgraded your Switch console, so it's wise to check beforehand.
Tears of the Kingdom can detect your Breath of the Wild save file and transfer the horses you had stabled in that game, preserving them intact. After all, this is the same Hyrule. This not only adds a nice touch to the experience but also saves you the hassle of capturing a new horse, taming it, and developing a bond with it. If you had a horse with exceptional stats in Breath of the Wild, you'll certainly want to bring it over.
Note: If you obtained Link's legendary horse, Epona, you can import it as well. However, please be aware that Epona won't possess one particular ability that regular horses have in the new game: towing materials and wagons. Epona is simply too special for such tasks.
Actively collect arrows along your path

Bows and arrows hold greater significance than ever in Tears of the Kingdom, primarily due to the game's new Fuse system.
Gone are the days of separate arrow types like fire, ice, and the like. Now, you can attach virtually any material to an arrow, producing useful (and sometimes useless) effects. You can freeze enemies from a distance, detonate explosive barrels, or create a well-placed light source in dark areas. It's exhilarating to experiment with these possibilities!
However, this means that you will consume a substantial number of arrows for various functions. Hence, it's crucial to develop the habit of diligently collecting arrows from battlefields and chests early on, ensuring you never run out. During the late stages of the game, we found ourselves with over 100 arrows, only to deplete them all when we needed them most. Avoid this situation at all costs!
While we're on the subject, consider adopting the same practice for Brightbloom Seeds. You'll appreciate it during the later stages of the main quest.
Remember the option to throw your materials

This tip relates to the previous one. Tears of the Kingdom requires you to utilize various materials for different purposes. You'll need to burn spiky foliage, illuminate paths, and demolish rocky obstacles. The simplest method involves attaching materials to an arrow and shooting it. However, as mentioned earlier, arrows hold significant value!
If you need to trigger an effect in a nearby location, it's important to remember that you can directly throw the item. Hold R1, then press Up on the D-Pad to replace your weapon with an item. Taking a page from the survival horror genre, conserve your arrows for situations where they are truly necessary!
Exchange hearts for stamina and vice versa

As you gradually complete more Shrines in Tears of the Kingdom, you will earn Light of Blessing orbs. These orbs can be exchanged for additional hearts or a longer stamina bar at the Goddess Statues scattered throughout the world.
Ultimately, the decision should be based on what benefits you the most. However, there will come a point in the game where progressing through the main story requires a specific number of hearts, and another point where a certain amount of stamina becomes essential.
Fortunately, you will eventually stumble upon a statue located at Lookout Landing, the central base of operations in Hyrule. This statue allows you to trade hearts for stamina and vice versa. An event triggers when one of the workers is startled by a voice emanating from within the wall.
Keep in mind that each heart or stamina segment you trade will cost you 100 rupees. Nevertheless, if you encounter these roadblocks, it's a much faster way to overcome them compared to the alternative of seeking out an additional 8 shrines! (Interestingly, this statue existed in Breath of the Wild as well, but many individuals I've spoken to were unaware of its existence!)
Always carry some Sticky Elixir

While there are countless items I could recommend you keep on hand at all times, such as food, arrows, weapons suitable for various situations, and fairies, one of the most valuable recipes in Tears of the Kingdom is the Sticky Elixir.
Do you recall those frustrating moments in Breath of the Wild when you attempted to climb a cliff, only for rain to start pouring, causing you to repeatedly slip off the surface? The Sticky Elixir effectively solves that problem by significantly improving your grip in wet conditions. It's not foolproof, and you may still experience occasional slips, but it allows you to climb much higher than you would otherwise.
