QS university ranking
The Best Student Cities report uses a mix of student reviews and official metrics to determine the best places for international students. To qualify, a city must have a population of over 250,000 and host at least two universities included in the QS university ranking. Each city was evaluated based on the following main categories:
- University rankings: Scores in QS’s latest university ranking.
- Student mix: Size of student population, international students, and inclusivity.
- Desirability: Safety, pollution, and student survey results on desirability.
- Employer activity: Job opportunities for students and graduates, and employer reputation.
- Affordability: Tuition fees and living costs.
- Student view: How students rate a city and the number who want to stay there after graduation.
Cities received a score out of 100 in each category, with an average score used for the final ranking.
QS highlighted Zurich's reputation for prosperity, orderliness, and low taxes, noting, “Zurich is renowned for its prosperity, orderliness and low taxes, which may make it sound more like a place for millionaires than international students. However, look a little closer and you’ll see it certainly deserves its place among the world’s top student cities.” Zurich is home to ETH Zurich, one of the best universities globally, and scored third in the world for desirability. As a hub for Swiss banks and insurance firms, Zurich was rated highly for student and graduate career opportunities. It also earned good scores for safety, livability, and access to nature.
