12-Year-Old Hungarian Surfer Shines in Shortboard Competition
In an impressive display of talent, 12-year-old Hungarian surfer Noel Cser recently clinched a bronze medal in the shortboard competition at the Hungarian Surf Fest, held on the picturesque Costa da Caparica near Lisbon, Portugal. This event, recognized as an Olympic discipline, showcased Cser's remarkable skills against adult competitors, highlighting his potential in the sport.
Noel Cser, who began his surfing journey in Hungary, has been living with his family in Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, for the past five years. The coastal environment of Tenerife naturally fostered his interest in surfing. "We live in a very windy place, so my father started windsurfing here, and I have always seen lots of surfers on the water. I liked the sport straight away, and we started within about six months," he shared in an interview with Index.
Despite being only 12 years old, the Hungarian Surf Fest 2024 marked Cser's third surfing competition, and notably, his first in the adult category. His performance was nothing short of extraordinary, as he showcased impressive technique and daring tricks that left spectators in awe. In the first round, he secured second place with a sensational slide, earning 3.07 points, and continued to impress in subsequent rounds.
Cser's journey to the finals was marked by a standout semi-final performance, where he overtook competitors Dávid Liptay and Lotfi Peiman, finishing with an overall score of 3.73 points, just behind Csaba Pinczés. In the final, he finished with a score of 4.47 points, placing him third overall, behind Zoltán Bakró and Csaba Pinczés.
The final results of the men’s Hungarian Surf Fest 2024 were as follows:
- Zoltán Bakró: 8.77 points
- Csaba Pinczés: 5.13 points
- Noel Cser: 4.47 points
- Zsolt Diószegi: 3.90 points
Looking ahead, Cser expressed aspirations for international competitions and possibly Olympic qualification, but emphasized that his primary goal is to enjoy surfing. The Hungarian Surf Fest not only serves as a competitive platform but also aims to unite the Hungarian surfing community, providing opportunities for emerging surfers and aspiring to become the official Hungarian surfing championships, potentially qualifying participants for the World Surfing Games.
