You know the feeling: it’s set to be the most beautiful summer’s day. But just lying around in the heat? There’s got to be more than that.
Want to experience something refreshing? Here are four very different ways to be close to water when hiking in Austria, with plenty of recommendations for your tour: from birdwatching by salt lakes to trails along thundering wild streams in enchanted gorges and tours that lead right through the floods.
Colourful Birds in Sight
A steppe landscape in Austria? With more than 340 different species of bird, some of them extremely rare? This combination will not just excite avid birdwatchers.
The landscape around Lake Neusiedl is unique and surprises with dense reed beds, sand steppes, and pastures, but also with shallow salt lakes or "Lacken", as they are called in Burgenland.
One particular treasure is the Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park, and if you spot bee-eaters, purple herons or even rare great bustards, you won’t want the tour to end. You can head out on your own or with an experienced ranger, but don’t forget your binoculars either way!

Hiking: From the Glacier to the Sea
Fantastic views across the lakes and surroundings are your reward for hiking up high. Options range from quick detours to the summit to multi-day tours.
One particularly notable example is the Alpe-Adria-Trail, offering 43 stages across a considerable 750 kilometres. The long-distance hiking trail leads from Austria’s highest mountain, the Großglockner, through three regions– Carinthia, Slovenia, and Friuli Venezia Giulia – to the Adriatic. Rivers, lakes, and finally the sea are the silent yet impressive companions on this journey. Take the two stages by Lake Millstatt, for example, in which the views of the water resting far below change with every metre you climb.
