5 Premier League clubs against plan to donate £250,000 each for Richard Scudamore's leaving present

Premier League chiefs have caused outrage after an incredible plan to give Richard Scudamore a £5m golden handshake.

Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck proposed the idea for all of the 20 clubs to contribute £250,000 each as a farewell gift to the outgoing Premier League chief executive.

But the idea has caused a major backlash and some clubs are now concerned about the reaction from fans and it will be voted on at the next Premier League meeting on Thursday.

Scudamore, 59, has been at the Premier League for 19 years and yesterday it was announced that TV executive Susanna Dinnage will take over the role at the end of the year.

But Scudamore has already earned in excess of £30m after nearly two decades in charge of the Premier League with a basic salary of £1m-a-year, annual bonuses take it up to £2.5m and the last two deals pocketed him a staggering £11m in bonuses.

Scudamore has been hugely successful in his time at the Premier League but Buck’s proposal has infuriated the average football fan while there has also been a clear push back from some clubs.

It enraged fans on social media with Arsenal season ticket holder John Williamson summing up a popular view after tweeting: “And people are wondering why fans are falling out of love for the game; this is a sick joke.”

It is understood up to five clubs are against the idea but the Premier League voting process only needs 14 clubs to push it through.

The furore detracted from the announcement of Dinnage who becomes the most powerful woman in English football and British sport.

She has a clear mandate and emphasis on negotiating a new era of TV deals with more online broadcasters entering the field.

Dinnage, who is currently Global President of Animal Planet, a part of Discovery, said: “I am excited at the prospect of taking on this fantastic role. The Premier League means so much to so many people.

“It represents the pinnacle of professional sport and the opportunity to lead such a dynamic and inspirational organisation is a great privilege.

With the support of clubs and the team, I look forward to extending the success of the League for many years to come.”
