7 Quick Murder Mysteries to Watch if You Liked ‘The Weekend Away'
Traveling as a new mother for the first time without your baby can be scary. But when your best friend disappears on the trip too, your vacation can turn into a nightmare. In The Weekend Away, starring Leighton Meester, that’s the unfortunate reality for Beth after a night of reluctant partying. Among gorgeous views and sunny sights, horrible tragedy and gut-wrenching suspense power this thriller.
If you enjoyed trying to figure out what the hell happened to Kate (Christina Wolfe) and piece together what little Beth can remember from that night, there are several other murder mysteries that might awaken more of your inner sleuth as well. And with The Weekend Away being only around 90 minutes (arguably the perfect movie length), these thrilling movies riddled with secrets and high stakes could be your next night-in flick.

1. Murder Mystery (97 mins)
Murder Mystery is a 2019 comedy starring Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler that has nearly the same premise as The Weekend Away. A couple try to take a relaxing vacation and find their way onto a luxurious boat, only for there to be a murder on board days later. They’re immediately cast as the main suspects thanks to the fact that they’re the only Americans on the ship, and, let’s face it, how Nick (Sandler)... behaves doesn’t help their case either. But unlike The Weekend Away, Murder Mystery has a levity to it that mixes Knives Out’s charismatic detective energy with a typical Sandler movie’s humor. It’s slightly longer than 90 minutes, but due to how close the theme is to Meester’s new film, it’s perfect to watch afterward.

2. No One Gets Out Alive (87 mins)
Coming in under 90 minutes is No One Gets Out Alive. It was released in 2021 and features a woman moving to America with high hopes, only to find herself living in an old, decrepit boardinghouse. She has to figure out what’s wrong with it, because it seems like it’s possibly preying on the people there. At the very least, it’s terrifying to live in. There’s definitely a supernatural and paranormal aspect to this movie that The Weekend Away doesn’t have, and it leans into horror more than mystery. But there are still mysteries to ponder while watching.

3. Brazen (96 mins)
Starring Alyssa Milano, Brazen really nails that classic concept: Maybe the people closest to you are hiding massive secrets. Grace (Milano) is a successful mystery novelist whose real life turns into a tragic plot seemingly right out of one of her books. While trying to uncover the truth of her sister’s murder, Grace also uncovers her secret life. Grace uses her mystery-author expertise IRL and tries to help on the case, which suggests a murderer in their family or amongst close friends. This has the thrill, family turmoil, and secrets that murder-mystery fans can cling to.

4. Lost Girls (95 mins)
In another case involving a disappearance, Lost Girls stars Amy Ryan as Mari, a mother who is desperately trying to get authorities to look for her missing daughter. Much like the unhelpful and reluctant police in The Weekend Away, Mari is met with doubt and skepticism about the severity of her daughter’s situation. With the added factor of alleged sex work, they’re even less inclined to help. Even though they urge Mari not to go public and spread awareness, she joins with other mothers and family who also have lost women the police aren’t properly searching for. This has a lot of heart and of course has the added effect of the audience trying to piece together the puzzle along with the main characters. Read More...
