After Kassa-Balantacounda: The Marine Protected Area will be extended to other municipalities
The Marine Protected Area (Amp) of Kassa-Balantacounda will be extended to municipalities located in the departments of Ziguinchor and Sédhiou (South), announced Wednesday in Niaguis, the Deputy Director of National Parks of Senegal, Moïse Diédhiou. “There is a manifestation of interest from local stakeholders, who would like the Marine Protected Area to be extended to their area,” he said during a workshop. This meeting, the discussion of which focused on the update of the Development and Management Plan (Pag) of the Kassa-Balantacounda Amp, was held in Niaguis, a town located in the Ziguinchor region.
The project to update the Kassa-Balantacounda Marine Protected Area Pag, developed by the NGO United Purpose, together with the State of Senegal, is funded by the European Union.
Created in April 2016, the Kassa-Balantacounda Amp, with an area of ​​23,300 hectares, is located in the Ziguinchor region, between the village of Agnack Petit, the village of Diagnon, the Casamance river and the town of Boutoupa Camaracounda. In this area, are the bolong of Sindor, mudflats and palmaceous bordering the National Road 6. "We are in Niaguis in communion with the populations, within the framework of the updating of the Pag of Amp Kassa-Balantacounda", underlined Khady Tendeng, project manager at United Purpose.
According to her, the European Union granted funds intended for the “implementation” of the project to manage the mangrove forests of Senegal and Benin. "Regarding this project, the main objective of which is to strengthen the protection of fragile mangrove ecosystems and their resilience, we have in view this project to update the Kassa-Balantacounda Amp", she explained.
Ms. Tendeng recalled that the Kassa-Balantacounda Amp contributes to the conservation of marine and coastal biodiversity, with a view to the economic development of local communities. Read More…
