Albert Edelfelt Studio Museum
See where this respected Finnish painter created over 200 works of art
The Albert Edelfelt Studio Museum is a historical site and cultural landmark located in Haikko, near Porvoo, Finland. This museum was originally the art studio of Albert Edelfelt, one of Finland’s most celebrated painters, known for his naturalistic and realist works. The studio, a red building with a skylight, was constructed in 1883 on the property that Edelfelt purchased after spending several summers there with his family. He found deep inspiration in the surrounding coastal landscape, which influenced many of his works.
Edelfelt, born in Porvoo in 1854, showed exceptional talent in drawing from a young age. He studied at the Finnish Art Society in Helsinki and later honed his skills in Antwerp and Paris, where he gained international recognition, becoming the first Finnish artist to achieve such fame. Despite his success abroad, Edelfelt remained deeply connected to his Finnish roots, often depicting Finnish culture, people, and history in his art.

The studio became a museum in 1951, preserving the space where Edelfelt created over 220 works. The museum showcases a collection of Edelfelt’s drawings, photographs, and personal items, offering visitors a glimpse into his life and creative process. In 2019, the museum complex expanded with the addition of Villa Albert, a showroom for changing exhibitions, which also includes a gift shop.
This site is not only a tribute to Edelfelt’s artistic legacy but also a significant piece of Finnish cultural history, illustrating the deep connection between the artist and his homeland.
