Algeria says army officer killed in clash with extremists
On Thursday, the Algerian defense ministry confirmed that an army officer was killed in a clash with suspected extremists during an operation in the wooded region of Tissemsilt, southwest of the capital. The ministry statement described the operation as an attempt to capture "a group of terrorists" and reported that four extremists were arrested in the incident.
It is worth noting that Algerian authorities often use the term "terrorist" to refer to armed extremists who have been active in the country since the early 1990s. During the 1990s, Algeria was embroiled in a civil war that pitted the army against multiple extremist groups and claimed the lives of an estimated 200,000 people.
In 2005, a Charter for Peace and Reconciliation was enacted to bring an end to the conflict. However, extremist groups continue to carry out sporadic attacks in the country. In January of this year, the defense ministry reported that 39 "terrorists" had been "eliminated" during targeted army operations in 2022.
