Angola's Remarkable Communications Progress: A Five-Year Journey
In a significant leap forward, Angola has made impressive strides in its communications sector over the past five years. This progress is underscored by a strategic partnership between Angola Telecom and Huawei, aimed at further boosting development in the industry.
The last time Angola's Minister of Telecommunications attended the Mobile World Congress was in 2019. Reflecting on the changes since then, he highlighted the rapid technological advancements that have transformed the telecom sector globally. The minister, Mr. Oliveira, who has a robust background in telecom engineering, emphasized the importance of network coverage for the development of various sectors in Angola.
One of the most notable developments in Angola's telecom landscape is the introduction of a third mobile operator, which has significantly increased subscriber numbers. Internet coverage has also seen substantial improvement, with 11 million new internet connections reported last year. This growth not only benefits the economy but also aligns Angola with global trends in digital connectivity.
The commercial launch of 5G technology marks another milestone in Angola's communications evolution, although it is currently limited to major cities. Mr. Oliveira expressed the government's commitment to expanding 5G coverage nationwide, recognizing its potential to enhance industries such as agriculture, tourism, and the broader economy.
A key focus for Angola is the development of talent within the communications sector. The government has initiated several ICT talent cultivation projects in collaboration with private partners, including the 'LEAP Digital Talent Development Program' supported by Huawei. The minister praised these initiatives, noting the creativity and hard work of Angola's youth and the importance of strong partnerships in building the country's infrastructure.
During the Mobile World Congress 2024, the minister witnessed the signing of Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) between Angola Telecom and Huawei Angola. These agreements aim to promote joint innovation and talent development in Angola's ICT sector. The minister acknowledged Huawei's continuous progress since its entry into Angola in 2001, highlighting the company's dedication to providing high-quality solutions and services.
The signing of the National Broadband Project by the Ministry of Telecommunications in 2022 represents a crucial milestone in deepening cooperation between Angola and its partners. The MoUs signed at the ceremony are expected to further contribute to the growth and development of Angola's ICT sector, reinforcing the country's position in the global communications landscape.
