Are you introverted, extroverted or ambiverted, like me?
A few years ago, I discovered something very interesting about myself: I absolutely need to spend time alone to recharge my batteries and recharge my batteries.
It's something that I always did quite naturally, but sometimes I felt a little guilty about this need to isolate myself. When I go on weekends or on vacation with friends for example, I always need to have some time for myself every day and I think that's why I like my morning routines so much. and evening, alone and quiet. I've always enjoyed doing things alone – I love having lunch alone at a restaurant or going to the movies alone – but I also take great pleasure in spending time with my family and friends!
Introversion VS extroversion
It was the psychiatrist Jung who introduced the concepts of introverted and extroverted personalities in the early 1920s in his book “Psychological Types”. It is said that extroverts draw their energy from the outside, especially through social interactions, while introverts draw their energy from the inside, especially through moments of solitude that are necessary for them.
We often associate introversion with shyness and, as a result, I had never considered myself to be introverted, because I am easy to contact and I am naturally at ease with others. It was after taking this MBTI test and finding out that I was 51% extroversion and 49% introversion that I started to take a closer look at introversion, which is actually not synonymous with shyness (although one can obviously be introverted AND shy).
The extraversion / introversion dichotomy is loaded with prejudices and as always, it is never good to put people in boxes! On the other hand, I am convinced that getting to know each other and knowing what makes us feel good is essential to being fulfilled on a daily basis! If, like me, you find it hard to consider yourself extroverted or introverted, the concept of ambiversion that I am going to talk to you about should resonate with you
Ambiversion, the best of both worlds?
Have you ever heard of ambiversion? Ambiverts fall between extroverts and introverts and would constitute a large part of the population. According to Adam Grant, an American psychologist who has studied the subject, ambiverts are particularly flexible and adaptable people , able to adjust their approach according to the situations and the people they meet. They can both thrive in both leadership and support roles and have great listening skills, while being confident enough to get their messages across, which makes them excellent communicators
Ambiverts are generally as comfortable with introverts as extroverts and their defining personality trait is the fact that they need both time alone AND time with people. others. Ambiverted people enjoy spending time with their friends as much as they do on their couch with a good book.
Personally, it's a concept that speaks to me enormously and this online test seems to confirm that I am well ambiverted. I really like the idea of nuance that ambiversion brings when you don't find yourself in this extroversion / ambiversion duality! I find it really interesting and becoming aware of it has allowed me to better manage and respect my energy and above all to stop feeling guilty for needing to spend time alone! Read More...
