Art Taipei and Taipei Art Week happening this October
Art lovers are in for a treat this October, as Art Taipei 2024 and the inaugural Taipei Art Week bring vibrant creativity to the city.
Art Taipei 2024
Celebrating its 31st edition, Art Taipei will take place from October 25 to 28 at the Taipei World Trade Center, gathering 123 galleries from eight countries. The fair will feature 73 local galleries alongside 50 international ones, including renowned names like Perrotin and Scai the Bathhouse, who are making a much-anticipated return.
A unique highlight is "Czech Stories," a special exhibition curated by the Czech Center Taipei and the Czech Economic and Cultural Office. It will feature five artists, with Jan Kadlec's 10-meter-long installation, "Copy" as the centerpiece, questioning art’s capacity to positively reflect reality.
Marketa Vankova, known for her unconventional work using cooked spaghetti to explore the subconscious, will also present pieces influenced by her decade-long stay in Sicily. Additionally, Jan Kalab, a graffiti pioneer, will exhibit his bold, large-scale geometric paintings. Kalab’s works are part of prestigious collections, including those of Dior, Tiffany, and the National Museum of the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
This year, Art Taipei is going fully digital to promote sustainability by eliminating 22,800 plastic VIP cards and 8,400 kilograms of printed materials, leading to an estimated 160-ton reduction in carbon emissions.
Taipei Art Week: In Bloom
Coinciding with the 140th anniversary of Taipei, Taipei Art Week will take place from October 19 to 31. With the theme "In Bloom," the event will connect 70 galleries across the city, including popular spaces like Ting Ting Art Space, Eslite Gallery, and Hiro Hiro Art Space.
The celebration also expands beyond gallery walls, with 28 public art installations sprinkled throughout the city, inviting residents and visitors to discover art in unexpected urban spaces.
Adding an international dimension, Kathryn Weir, former Director of Cultural Development at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, will participate in an international forum during the event.
Both Art Taipei and Taipei Art Week are organized by the Taiwan Art Gallery Association, creating a dual-platform festival that promises to engage art enthusiasts with exhibitions, forums, and immersive experiences throughout Taipei. Whether you're drawn to cutting-edge installations or thoughtful public art, these events will showcase the city’s blossoming art scene in all its forms.
