Austrian Party FPÖ vows to enshrine two genders in constitution
Austria's Freedom Party (FPÖ), currently leading in the polls, has unveiled plans to enshrine in the country's constitution the idea that there are only two genders. This proposal is part of the party's broader agenda to combat what it describes as "woke madness," which includes banning transgender athletes from participating in women's sports. The FPÖ's manifesto also promises to prohibit civil servants from using gender-inclusive language and to cut public funding for what it labels "woke ideology."
The party argues that acknowledging more than two genders or allowing gender changes disregards the natural human condition. It frames its stance as a defense of social foundations and is committed to rejecting what it calls "transgender brainwashing." The FPÖ also vows to protect women’s sports by ensuring that transgender or intersex athletes cannot compete in female categories, citing recent controversies in international sports competitions.
Critics, including LGBTQ+ advocacy groups, have condemned the FPÖ's policies as regressive and discriminatory, arguing that they violate human rights and perpetuate harmful myths about transgender individuals. These groups have urged voters to oppose the FPÖ's platform, emphasizing the need for greater recognition and respect for the rights of trans and non-binary people in Austria.
The FPÖ, under the leadership of Herbert Kickl, has gained significant support by tapping into public discontent over COVID-19 restrictions and immigration issues. The party's manifesto also promises to pardon those convicted of breaching COVID-19 rules and to repay fines imposed during the pandemic, framing these regulations as violations of fundamental rights.
