Bilingual Book Honours Vietnam’s National Treasures
As of January 18, 2024, Vietnam has officially recognized 294 artifacts and groups of objects as national treasures, following 12 rounds of approvals since 2012. These treasures, representing the country's rich history, culture, and scientific achievements, are now the focus of a newly published bilingual book titled "Thousand Years of Việt Nam National Civilisation". This publication, a collaboration between the Sự Thật (Truth) National Political Publishing House and the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, aims to bring these treasures to a wider audience by featuring content in both Vietnamese and English.
National treasures hold significant value due to their historical, cultural, and scientific importance. They are preserved across various provinces and cities in Vietnam, with specific methods tailored to their material and age. The recognition process for these treasures is stringent, requiring that artifacts meet criteria related to origin, uniqueness, historical significance, and cultural value. They must also serve as evidence of major historical events or be closely linked to national heroes or outstanding figures. Additionally, recognized artifacts often include famous works of art with ideological, humanistic, and aesthetic values or notable inventions that have promoted social development during particular historical periods.
Efforts to promote and introduce these treasures have taken various forms, including exhibitions both domestically and internationally, as well as digital promotion through websites, social media, and thematic stamp collections. The new bilingual book aims to further these efforts by providing the public with a comprehensive and accessible overview of all recognized national treasures.
The book offers a chronological journey through Vietnam's national treasures, beginning from the period BC and extending to the revolutionary war, marked by the pivotal 1975 Spring General Offensive and Uprising. Each treasure is presented with images and concise yet detailed information, enabling readers to gain a thorough understanding of their origins, characteristics, and unique values. The book is designed to provide a basic yet comprehensive insight into these artifacts, making it a valuable resource for both Vietnamese and international readers interested in the nation's cultural heritage.
"Thousand Years of Việt Nam National Civilisation" is an essential read for anyone interested in Vietnam's national treasures. By showcasing these artifacts in a bilingual format, the book not only honours these treasures but also promotes their cultural significance to a global audience. This publication is a testament to Vietnam's dedication to preserving and celebrating its rich cultural history.
