Blastr Green Steel selects Primetals Technologies as its technological partner for its plant in Finland
The partnership includes a number of essential components for the production of iron and steel.
Primetals Technologies Ltd. has been selected as Blastr Green Steel's technology partner for its planned steel plant in Inkoo, Finland. The Helsinki-based company anticipates producing 2.5 million tons of low-carbon steel annually at the plant.
According to Blastr, the partnership includes the design of a direct reduced iron (DRI) plant among other important components in the production of iron and steel; and a melt shop for electric steelmaking; a line of Arvedi ESP; as well as a continuous galvanizing and pickling line. According to Blastr, the partnership between London-based Primetals and Charlotte, North Carolina-based Midrex Technologies Inc. to develop a sustainable and efficient steel manufacturing process brings together cutting-edge technologies and the expertise of Primetals and Midrex. Primetals will ensure that the new facilities meet the most recent industry standards to contain carbon emissions.
Mark Bula, CEO of Blastr, states, "This partnership marks a significant milestone in our journey towards sustainable steel production and decarbonizing the steel value chain." We are well-positioned to drive innovation and shape the future of steel production by combining our strengths with those of industry leaders.
The steelmaker claims that a consortium consisting of Midrex and Primetals will provide the Midrex H2TM plant, which will be powered by up to 100 percent green hydrogen. Blastr will be able to decarbonize other value chains by providing customers with ultra-low-carbon iron feedstock thanks to the plant's production of hot DRI and hot briquetted iron (HBI).
Midrex President and CEO K.C. Woody states, "We are pleased and excited by the selection of Midrex H2 as the DRI technology by Blastr." Blastr is positioned to play a significant role in the decarbonization of European iron and steelmaking due to the combination of 100% hydrogen-based HDRI and HBI production.
According to Blastr, Primetals will also provide a melt shop based on an electric arc furnace (EAF) that is intended for direct charging of hot DRI and melts recycled scrap metal. The melt shop will be fully automated and feature an advanced control system. Electricity and automation, including cutting-edge automation systems and production management optimization solutions, are the responsibility of the technology partner.
According to Primetals Head of Upstream Technologies Andreas Viehboeck, "the production process will be optimized with digitalization, enhanced use of robot technology, and advanced remote control solutions to enable the highest possible level of autonomous operations enhancing occupational safety, a top priority for the project."
According to the eco-friendly steelmaker, Blastr will be able to produce steel grades for the automotive sector, among other industries, using the secondary metallurgy equipment supplied by Primetals, which includes a ladle furnace and RH plant. Moreover, Primetals will give a framework to treat off-gases and a plant to recuperate heat for the electric steel plant, guaranteeing proficient energy use.
The partnership also includes a continuous pickling and galvanizing line, an Arvedi ESP thin slab casting and hot rolling line, and a coated steel sheet production line for various industrial applications.
"Blastr's super low CO2 targets require innovation that guarantees net-zero direct CO2 emanations from the steel creation," Blastr Boss Innovation Official Mikael Lindvall says. " Arvedi ESP technology, which is an officially certified carbon-neutral thin-slab casting and hot-rolling process, and the Midrex plant, which features an electric heater as an alternative to a gas-fired reformer/heater, are two key technologies needed to meet our ambitious emission targets.
