Bolivia Launches Canoeing Project Ahead of LA 2028
On November 17, Bolivia officially launched a two-month initiative aimed at promoting canoeing in the country, marking a significant step towards professionalizing the sport. This project, spearheaded by the International Canoe Federation (ICF) and funded by the International Olympic Committee's Olympic Solidarity Programme, seeks to position Bolivia as a competitive force in international canoeing events, including the upcoming 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
The National Sports System Development Project (DNSS) encompasses several critical areas to enhance the sport of canoeing in Bolivia:
i. Canoe Production: The first phase of the initiative, running from November 17 to November 22, focuses on local canoe production. Four specific moulds will be utilized to manufacture canoes, with the Bolivian Navy expected to replicate this process to foster the growth of the sport.
ii. Coaching Development: In December, the project will shift to Cochabamba for a week of essential activities. From December 9 to 16, local coaches will participate in a level one technical course to enhance their skills and knowledge.
iii. Governance and Training: A governance workshop for members of the National Federation is scheduled for December 17, followed by training for National Technical Officials (NTOs) from December 18 to 22, led by an expert from the ICF.
iv. Talent Identification: A crucial talent identification phase will occur during the National Canoeing Championships in Cochabamba on December 21 and 22. This event will serve as a key opportunity to evaluate the program's progress, with talented athletes being identified for specialized training sessions organized by the ICF.
Goals and Future Aspirations
The project aims to achieve several significant objectives:
i. Olympic Qualification: One of the primary goals is to qualify at least one boat for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
ii. Pan American Games Success: Bolivia also aims to win a medal at the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, in 2027.
iii. Sustainable Development: The initiative emphasizes sustainable development in the sport, focusing on building a strong foundation for future success.
The project will conclude with a comprehensive review of the results and the formulation of strategies for the new Olympic cycle, setting the stage for Bolivian athletes to make their mark on the international canoeing scene.
As Bolivia embarks on this ambitious journey, the canoeing project represents a significant investment in the country's sporting future, aiming to elevate its athletes to new heights on the global stage.
