Central Romania: Sibiu’s Brukenthal Museum to Open National Art Gallery in November
The Brukenthal Museum in Sibiu, Romania, is set to unveil its National Art Gallery to the public on November 24, following extensive restoration and modernization efforts. This highly anticipated opening promises to enrich the cultural landscape of Sibiu and provide visitors with a comprehensive view of Romanian art.
The National Art Gallery will showcase an exceptional array of artworks and artifacts, including sculpture, photography, historical items, books, and drawings. The exhibition will draw from the Brukenthal National Museum’s extensive collection, featuring special sections dedicated to the Astra Association Museum and the museum's art collection, as well as a focus on photography and the Fischer studio in Sibiu.
The inaugural Romanian Art Gallery at the Brukenthal National Museum first opened its doors on November 25, 2008, marking a significant milestone in the cultural life of both the city and the country. The upcoming collection aims to build on that legacy, presenting an even broader selection of artworks.
“This is a refresh and update of the former Romanian art gallery, which was first opened in 2008. This time, we are changing the exhibition’s narrative,” said Alexandru Constantin Chituţă, the museum’s manager. The new exhibition will span from the 15th century to contemporary works by artists such as Corneliu Baba. Additionally, plans are underway to open a permanent exhibition at the Contemporary Art Museum, Brukenthal Modern, which will feature works from Baba to present-day artists.
The exhibition will highlight the cosmopolitan nature of Romanian art across the three historical regions of the country, illustrating the evolution of Romanian painting over more than 600 years, from the 15th to the 20th centuries.
“Valuable and renowned works by some of the most representative masters of national art will be displayed in a fully renovated and modernized space, made possible by the Brukenthal National Museum with support from the Ministry of Culture and JTI,” Chituţă added.
The Romanian art collection of the Brukenthal National Museum comprises 2,000 works, showcasing the evolution of Romanian painting and reflecting the regional characteristics of various parts of the country. Notably, the collection features 800 pieces that highlight the artistic phenomenon in southern Transylvania.
The opening of the National Art Gallery at the Brukenthal Museum represents a significant cultural event for Sibiu and Romania as a whole. With its extensive collection and modernized exhibition space, the gallery aims to provide a deeper understanding of Romanian art and its historical context, making it a must-visit destination for art enthusiasts and tourists alike.
