China Supports Trump's Ukraine Peace Effort at G20 as U.S. Allies Stand by Zelenskiy
At a recent G20 meeting in South Africa, China expressed its support for U.S. President Donald Trump's initiative to negotiate a peace deal with Russia to end the ongoing war in Ukraine. This development comes as U.S. allies continue to rally around Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, emphasizing their commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty.
Since taking office less than a month ago, Trump has dramatically altered U.S. policy regarding the conflict, moving away from a strategy aimed at isolating Moscow. This shift followed a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin and discussions between senior U.S. and Russian officials that have seemingly sidelined Ukraine in the peace process.
During the G20 discussions, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated, “China supports all efforts that promote peace in Ukraine, including the recent consensus reached between the United States and Russia.” He emphasized China’s willingness to play a constructive role in resolving the crisis, although he did not reiterate his earlier stance from the Munich Security Conference that all parties involved in the conflict should be included in peace talks.
Wang also noted that China's involvement in mediation could help mitigate the risk of the U.S. leveraging improved relations with Russia to undermine China's interests.
In conjunction with these developments, the Trump administration announced plans for further talks with Russia aimed at resolving the nearly three-year-long conflict. Following a lengthy meeting in Saudi Arabia, Russia acknowledged the discussions as useful but reiterated its firm stance against NATO's potential membership for Ukraine, indicating that it would not tolerate such an expansion.
As the geopolitical landscape evolves, the dynamics between the U.S., China, and Russia will continue to shape the future of the conflict in Ukraine, with implications for international relations and regional stability.
