Christian Kanangire wins the 2024 Gako Sprint Rally
Christian Kanangire delivered a commanding performance to claim victory at the 2024 Gako Sprint Rally in Bugesera District on Saturday, September 14. His win, achieved alongside co-pilot Kevin Mujiji in their Subaru Impreza, not only secured them the top spot in the rally but also catapulted them to the lead in the National Championship standings after three rounds.
The rally covered a total of 77 kilometers, with drivers competing in two super stages in Gasenyi (24km each) and two in Ruhuha (14.5km each). Out of the seven drivers initially registered, only five participated after Genese Semana and Huraha Sekamana withdrew from the race.
Kanangire and Mujiji clocked an impressive time of 58 minutes and 42 seconds, dominating the super stage in Gasenyi and both stages in Ruhuha. They faced tough competition from Team Queen Kalimpinya and co-pilot Olivier Ngabo, who finished as runners-up with a time of 1 hour, 9 minutes, and 56 seconds. Mike Rutuku and his co-pilot Alain Gasarabwe claimed third place, finishing in 1 hour, 10 minutes, and 13 seconds.
Gratien Rutabingwa and Irène Munyaneza, driving a Peugeot 106, came in fourth, while Claude Gakwaya and Claude Mugabo, in a Subaru Impreza, finished fifth after experiencing an accident during the first stage at Gasenyi.
With their Bugesera victory, Kanangire and Mujiji now lead the National Championship standings with 63 points. The next highly anticipated event on the national rally calendar is the Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Rally, scheduled for October 18-20.
