Avengers and Platinum Credit Heathens triumph at Kyabazinga 7s
Avengers and Platinum Credit Heathens secured dominant victories at the Kyabazinga 7s, further establishing their positions at the top of the 2024 Nile Special 7s Series standings.
In the women's Cup Final, Avengers delivered a crushing 35-00 win over Thunderbirds, marking their third podium finish of the season. This victory was particularly sweet for the Entebbe-based team, as it avenged their semifinal loss to the same opponents at the Gulu 7s the previous weekend. Black Pearls, who were close contenders, took home the bronze medal.
In the men's Cup Final, the Platinum Credit Heathens faced a much tougher battle against hosts Walukuba. The match went into extra time, with Heathens clinching a 12-07 win thanks to a sudden-death try. This victory secured their second consecutive title, having also won the Gulu 7s. Their closest rivals, Black Pirates, faltered in the Cup Quarterfinals, finishing in fifth place.
The Kyabazinga 7s marked a turning point in the series standings. Notably, Nile Rapids dropped from fourth place for the first time, while Kakira Simbas climbed the ranks, defeating three core teams.
With just two rounds remaining, Avengers and Heathens now lead the 2024 Nile Special 7s Series. The competition will take a short break and resume on September 28-29 for the penultimate round, the Mbarara 7s.
