Climbing on Bornholm

Denmark is certainly not known to anyone as a climbing country. There is nothing for sport climbers to look for on Bornholm, as there is not even a single climbing spot on the island. Everything is based on your own belay and you can even use hooks.

There is a climbing school called Klatre-Centeret in the capital Ronne (address: Nyvey 8, 3700 Ronne ).

Rock climbing

Bornholm is the only place in the whole of Denmark where granite occurs. There are small rocks and stones, something for lovers of small formations, scattered almost all over the island, as well as rock walls of up to 30 metres.

The most interesting climbing areas are the cliffs around Jons Kapel, Hellingdomsklipperne and at Hammershus Castle. Also interesting is the quarry at Hammeren - Mosseloken.

The caves on Bornholm are built into the granite cliffs of the coast. They are several metres to 70 metres long. They are almost straight crevices, without any branches. The corridors, which are usually between 1.5 and 3 metres wide, are up to 10 metres high. Most of the caves are flooded during storms or there is still water in them.

The largest and most interesting object - the Moist Cave (Vade Ovn) is 70 metres long and lies in the cliff below Hammershus Castle. Unfortunately, it is completely flooded. Due to the narrowness of the cave, it can only be swum in a small dinghy.
There is one more cave below the castle - the Dry Cave (Torre Ovn), but it is only 6 metres long.
Those who want to visit a Danish cave with dry feet are better off on the cliff Helligdomsklipperne on the northeast side of the island. Here we have three objects The Black Cave (Sorte Ovn), to which leads a metal ladder and a signpost. It is 38 metres long.
Also following the signpost we reach a 23 metres long cave, again called Torre Ovn, and on the side there is Vade Ovn, accessible only from the water (we have not been able to determine its length).

This repetition of cave names, which makes it difficult to know which cave it is, also occurs at other Danish sites. The last three small caves with lengths of 5, 5 and 10 metres respectively are located at the cliff Jons Kapel and are known as Jon Ovn. Read More…
