Crnogorska Pogača (Montenegrin Bread) Recipe
Crnogorska pogača is a traditional Montenegrin bread that is often served during special occasions and family gatherings. This soft, round bread is known for its delicious flavor and beautiful presentation. Here’s a simple recipe to make your own Crnogorska pogača at home.
Ingredients
- 500 g (4 cups) all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (7 g) dry yeast or 25 g fresh yeast
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 250 ml (1 cup) warm water
- 2 tablespoons olive oil (plus extra for brushing)
- 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)
- Sesame seeds (optional)
Instructions
- If using dry yeast, dissolve it in warm water with the sugar and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy. If using fresh yeast, crumble it into the warm water and stir until dissolved.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and olive oil.
- Mix the ingredients together until a dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour as needed.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Place the kneaded dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Transfer it to a floured surface and shape it into a round loaf.
- Place the shaped dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F).
- Using a sharp knife, make shallow cuts on the surface of the dough in a crisscross pattern or create a spiral design.
- Brush the top of the dough with the beaten egg and sprinkle sesame seeds on top if desired.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Remove from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack.
- Once cooled, slice the Crnogorska pogača and serve it warm or at room temperature. It pairs wonderfully with cheese, cured meats, or as a side to soups and stews.
