'Dangerous Person Alert' Ends as Police Locate Dead Suspect in Calgary Double Murder
Calgary police have confirmed the death of a suspect in a double homicide that occurred on Sunday night, leading to the cancellation of an emergency alert that warned the public about an armed individual. The suspect was identified as Benedict Kaminski, 38, and was found deceased by police on Monday afternoon.
The emergency alert was issued around 12:15 p.m. on Monday, warning residents in northwest Calgary and the nearby community of Bearspaw about a "dangerous man with a firearm." Police received tips from the public regarding the suspect's vehicle, which was spotted parked along a road in the Water Valley area. Upon arrival, officers located Kaminski nearby, deceased.
The tragic events began on Sunday, December 29, when police were called to a residence in the 0 to 100 block of Kincora Grove N.W. at approximately 9:30 p.m. Officers discovered a man in his 70s who had been killed. As the investigation progressed, a second victim—a woman in her 30s—was found dead at a different location in the 300 block of Tuscany Ridge Heights N.W. around 11:15 p.m.
Insp. Lee Wayne of the Calgary Police Service's major crimes unit stated, "Right now, the timeline is unclear." He explained that the police were initially called to Kincora, where they found the male victim, and later went to Tuscany based on concerns raised by family members, leading to the discovery of the female victim. The exact sequence of events remains under investigation.
Authorities believe that both deaths were targeted and of a domestic nature. Insp. Wayne noted that Kaminski was not previously known to police and had no prior convictions. "We do very much think this was a targeted incident," he said, emphasizing the importance of public assistance in the investigation.
The motive behind the killings is still unknown, but police are exploring the domestic connection between the suspect and the victims. Autopsies for both victims are scheduled to take place on Friday, January 3.
Calgary police are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward by calling 403-266-1234. The investigation continues as authorities work to piece together the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
