If fashion week serves as a reflection of our desires, then the past few seasons have decided that Nineties nostalgia is the decade we can't get enough of. As far back as the autumn/winter 2021 haute couture shows, a mix of pastel eyeshadows, pencil-thin brows and space buns brought the decade back into clear view.
Last season, the influence of the Nineties made itself known again, this time through glossed-up lips seen at Victoria Beckham and Fendi by Versace, straightened hair at Chanel (see below), as well as the return of blue frosted eyeshadow at Osman.
Since then, the Nineties trend has continued to grow, sparking a fascination for a younger generation who weren't old enough to experience the heavily aesthetically-driven decade the first time around. Nineties-inspired Instagrams have proliferated, with iconic figures of the era such as Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, Lisa Bonet, and of course, the original Sex and The City cast providing an abundance of beauty and sartorial inspiration.
This season, one of the more unexpected hair accessories of the decade was dusted off and given a new lease of life at David Koma's autumn/winter 2022 show. To compliment Koma's collection of opulence-meets-sportswear, session stylist Kenna Land used zig-zag hairbands to scrape back hair from the models' faces, putting a high fashion, athletic twist on a much-loved Nineties style and citing an early 2000s film as his inspiration.
"When David sent me his mood-board I was like 'what's that triggering for me?'," Land told Bazaar backstage at the show. "All of these football references, it's all about his celebration and representation of British culture. When he came here 20 years ago it was about the early 2000s, and all of his inspirations were around Britpop and that era. Keira Knightley in Bend it like Beckham, she was my muse really."
