Huzarensalade, or "Hussar Salad," is a traditional Dutch dish that combines a variety of ingredients into a delicious and colorful salad. It’s often served at parties, celebrations, or as a side dish. This salad typically features a mix of vegetables, meats, and a creamy dressing. Here’s a simple recipe to make your own Huzarensalade at home.

Ingredients

- 500g (1 lb) cooked potatoes, peeled and diced

- 200g (7 oz) cooked carrots, diced

- 200g (7 oz) cooked peas

- 200g (7 oz) pickles, diced (preferably gherkins)

- 200g (7 oz) cooked ham or chicken, diced

- 100g (3.5 oz) apple, peeled and diced (optional)

- 1 small onion, finely chopped

- 200g (7 oz) mayonnaise

- 2 tablespoons yogurt or sour cream (optional, for a lighter dressing)

- Salt and pepper, to taste

- Fresh parsley, for garnish

Instructions

- Prepare the Vegetables: If you haven't done so already, cook the potatoes, carrots, and peas until tender. Allow them to cool completely before mixing them into the salad.

- Combine Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the diced potatoes, carrots, peas, pickles, diced ham or chicken, apple (if using), and chopped onion.

- Make the Dressing: In a separate bowl, mix the mayonnaise with yogurt or sour cream (if using). Season with salt and pepper to taste. Adjust the consistency of the dressing by adding more yogurt or mayonnaise if desired.

- Mix Everything Together: Pour the dressing over the salad mixture and gently fold everything together until well combined. Be careful not to mash the potatoes.

- Chill: Cover the salad and refrigerate for at least 1-2 hours to allow the flavors to meld together.
