"Echoes" by Valeria Duca: A Reflection on Refugees at the National Art Museum of Moldova

The National Art Museum of Moldova recently inaugurated "Echoes," an exhibition by Valeria Duca, to commemorate the third anniversary of Ukraine’s full-scale invasion. This poignant exhibition serves as a space for reflection on the plight of refugees both within Moldova and globally, while also highlighting the solidarity between Ukraine and Moldova and the resilience of the Ukrainian people.

"Echoes" features a compelling collection of paintings by Duca, alongside audio pieces gathered with the support of the National Congress of Ukrainians in Moldova and the Ukrainian Culture and Art Association “PTASHKA.” The exhibition also includes art-based activities organized by INTERSOS Moldova and interactive installations created by Duca and Victoria Peev, enriching the visitor experience and fostering engagement with the themes of the exhibition.

During the inauguration, President Maia Sandu emphasized the dual focus of the exhibition: "Today, three years after the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, we reflect on the suffering brought by war, but also on the incredible courage of Ukrainians. Here in Moldova, we have peace thanks to their bravery." Her remarks underscored the importance of recognizing both the hardships faced by refugees and the strength demonstrated by those affected by the conflict.

Paun Rohovei, Ukraine’s designated ambassador to Moldova, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the unity and determination of Ukrainians in their defense of their homeland. "Today, more than ever, unity is crucial. And we deeply appreciate all those who stand with Ukraine," he stated, reinforcing the message of solidarity that permeates the exhibition.

Anne-Marie Deutschlander, the UNHCR representative in Moldova, praised the country's efforts to support Ukrainian refugees, noting Moldova's significant role in providing safety and assistance to those fleeing the war. "The war in Ukraine is not over. Attacks on cities and civilians continue, families remain separated, and people are still struggling to rebuild their lives in exile," she added, reminding attendees of the ongoing challenges faced by many.

Since the onset of the full-scale invasion, over 6 million people have fled Ukraine, with Moldova recording more than 1.9 million border crossings. The country has welcomed the highest number of Ukrainian refugees per capita, with over 136,000 individuals choosing to stay, highlighting Moldova's commitment to humanitarian support during this crisis.

"Echoes" stands as a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity, inviting visitors to reflect on the ongoing impact of war and the importance of solidarity and compassion in supporting those affected by conflict.
