Egypt celebrates Martyr's Day on March 9
CAIRO – 9 March 2022: Egypt celebrates Martyr's Day on March 9 every year in recognition of our righteous martyrs.
The day is originally held in the memory of Lieutenant General Abdel Moneim Riyad's martyrdom in 1969, when he went to the front on the second day of the War of Attrition to personally follow up on the results of the previous day’s battle and to be among his armed forces' colleagues in such a violent and continuous combat to exhaust the enemy.
While passing on the forces on the front lines north of Ismailia, Riyad was fatally wounded by enemy artillery fire during the clash, and died during his transfer to Ismailia Hospital.
