Mass memorial and burial planned for victims of Lusikisiki shootings
A mass memorial is set to take place this weekend to honor the 18 victims who tragically lost their lives in two separate shooting incidents in Lusikisiki, Eastern Cape. The deadly attacks occurred on Friday night, leaving 15 women and three men dead, including a 14-year-old boy—the youngest among the victims.
Although no arrests have been made in connection to the shootings, the national police minister, during a visit to the area, confirmed that one individual has been brought in for questioning. However, the motive behind the gruesome attacks remains unknown, according to police sources.
The memorial service is scheduled for Sunday, October 6, 2024, with the private funerals to follow the next weekend, on October 12 and 13. Khuselwa Rantjie, spokesperson for the Eastern Cape Premier, emphasized that this decision was reached after the Provincial Government engaged with the grieving families to address their needs and offer support in this challenging period.
Rantjie explained that after the communal memorial service, the families would proceed with private, intimate funerals, each observing their own traditional and cultural practices. She added that the government, with assistance from local businesses, will provide material support to the families, ensuring that their loved ones are laid to rest with the dignity they deserve.
