Iran’s president heads for Qatar as Iran's army trains with Oman
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is set to visit Qatar to attend the 19th Asian Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) Summit, where he will meet with the Emir of Qatar and participate in a meeting of high-ranking Iranian and Qatari delegations. The president's trip is aimed at strengthening diplomatic ties between Iran and Qatar, and is part of Iran's ongoing efforts to shore up its regional influence.
The visit comes amid a backdrop of heightened tensions in the region, with Iran's proxies continuing to wage a war of attrition against Israel. Qatar has been increasingly hostile to Israel, and has been critical of the recent ground operation against Hezbollah in Lebanon. However, it is also seen as a key player in brokering a potential ceasefire deal between Hamas and Israel.
In addition to the president's visit to Qatar, Iran's army is also conducting joint military training with the Sultanate of Oman. The training, known as the Mountain Falcons 1 (Saqour al-Jabal 1) exercise, began on Monday in Jebel Al-Khader province of Oman. The exercise is aimed at sharing experiences, joint combat training, and improving the level of combat and operational readiness.
Iran's ties with Oman are seen as increasingly close, with Oman having remained neutral in many of the region's conflicts. The country has also been viewed as a peaceful and stable state in the region, and its joint training with Iran has raised some eyebrows. However, the Iranian ground forces are seen as a less ideological part of Iran's security forces, and the training can be seen as part of Iran's influence operations in the Gulf and its desire to project security in the region.
The Iranian president's visit to Qatar and the joint military training with Oman are both seen as part of Iran's efforts to strengthen its regional influence and project its power in the Gulf. The country is also a member of other economic groups such as BRICS and the SCO, and is working to become closer to China and Russia.
