Events marking 25th anniversary of Good Friday Agreement take place across island of Ireland
A ceremony at Stormont to mark the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement has begun.
Several events are to take place across the island of Ireland today as people reflect 25 years on from the signing of the agreement.
While the 25th anniversary of the signing of the accord is 10 April, the holy day of Good Friday will always be associated with the diplomatic feat that brought 30 years of bloodshed largely to an end.
Speaker Alex Maskey is hosting the Stormont event in the Great Hall at Parliament Buildings which will feature contributions from several of the architects of the 1998 peace deal.
Former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and former Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams are among those to address the ceremony.
There will also be a video message from former US senator George Mitchell, who chaired the negotiations which led to the agreement.
Addressing the ceremony, Maskey said: “On Good Friday, 25 years ago, after years of negotiations and against all expectations, an historic agreement was reached.
