Farmers in Ganda hope to harvest 5,000 tonnes of wheat
Under the program to relaunch wheat cultivation in Chicuma commune, in Ganda municipality (Benguela), local farmers forecast a harvest of 5,000 tonnes of this cereal by July this year.
According to the head of the municipal Office for Studies, Planning and Statistics, João Kafiele, 20 tonnes of wheat seed were distributed to 750 families, under the said programme.
João Kafiele referred that this initiative aims to reduce the costs of importing this important product for the population’s diet.
In the same vein, he informed that local and provincial authorities have already identified some national producers willing to invest in the production, processing and distribution of wheat.
On the other hand, he spoke about the process of re-launching the production of Arabica coffee, where a project is emerging in the town of Cassipeira, in which farmers were awarded 46,000 seedlings of this species of red berry and a space is being identified for the creation of a nursery.
