"The subject of this painting, a character in a landscape, is obviously part of the impressionist painting universe. In this sense, although the shepherd occupies a well-marked place in the composition (through the verticality of the silhouette, through the brown spots of the coat contrasting with the ambience), the first protagonist of the image is of course the summer sunlight, captured in colored whites, in shades of light semolina, in pale pinks, bathing the ensemble in muted tones. In the background, lost in a mist of whites, one might suspect, the mountains. The artist does not provide us with the year of execution, but the work is datable by its specificity in the white period and probably made around 1896-1906. By subject and pictorial treatment,, it is stated on the website of the Artmark Auction House.
In this auction, other paintings by the great Nicolae Griogorescu were also presented. "Inn in Brittany" - oil on wood 25 x 37 cm signed lower left, in red, "Grigorescu" - was estimated by the organizers at 40,000 - 70,000 euros, being awarded for the sum of 60,000 euros. Read More…
