Former Cork City Pub to Be Converted into Apartments
The former Roisin Dubh bar, located at the corner of Wolfe Tone Street and Cattle Market Avenue in Shandon, Cork City, is set to undergo a transformation into residential accommodation. Developers IRE Communications have received approval from Cork City Council to convert the pub into eight new apartments.
The approved plans include:
- Ground Floor: Conversion of the existing pub area into a two-bedroom apartment.
- First Floor: Transformation into a second two-bedroom apartment.
- Attic: Conversion into a one-bedroom apartment.
- Extensions: Demolition of existing extensions, to be replaced with two new extensions.
This decision comes more than two years after the council initially rejected a similar proposal for the Roisin Dubh. In 2022, the council expressed concerns that the development would "seriously injure the visual amenity" of the area and could negatively impact neighboring properties. After a second unsuccessful application in 2023, the developers made slight modifications to their plans and reapplied in 2024, leading to the current approval.
In related news, Castleview AFC has also received planning approval from Cork City Council for upgrades to its grounds. The football club plans to redevelop two existing soccer playing fields, replacing them with an all-weather playing surface. The project will include:
- Replacement of existing floodlights on the first pitch with LED floodlighting.
- Installation of six new 15-meter high LED floodlights on the second pitch.
- Construction of a car parking area to the east and southeast of the second pitch.
- A new spectator stand to be built to the south of the pitch.
- High fencing around both pitches, realignment of the road entrance to the second pitch, and installation of 12 six-meter high LED lights in the walkway and car park area.
The conversion of the Roisin Dubh pub into apartments marks a significant step in addressing housing needs in Cork City, while the upgrades to Castleview AFC's facilities will enhance the local sports infrastructure. These developments reflect ongoing efforts to adapt and improve urban spaces in response to community needs.
