Guilherme Mampuya, a renowned Angolan artist, has come a long way from his days as a lawyer. With a passion for art that couldn't be contained, he left the corporate world behind to pursue his dream of becoming a full-time artist. Today, his unique style, which combines African motifs with the influences of Dali, Dubuffet, and Picasso, has made him one of Africa's most celebrated artists.
In his studio, Guilherme brings his vibrant imagination to life, splashing colours onto the canvas with reckless abandon. His art is a reflection of his Angolan heritage, infused with the rich cultural traditions of his homeland. "I wanted to break free from the conventional corporate life and explore the world of art, which is full of colour and creativity," he explains.
Guilherme's background in law has surprisingly influenced his artistic approach. "What I learned in law school was self-control, research, and logic. I think I put that in my art," he reveals. This unique blend of skills has helped him create art that resonates with the corporate world, earning him commissions from companies like Fidelidade Angola.
Guilherme's ambitions don't stop at his own art. He dreams of building a museum of Angolan art, a pantheon that will showcase the works of other African artists. "It's going to be a four-hectare space, and everything is in motion," he enthuses. He also hopes to make his mark on Angola's new airport in Luanda, painting the control tower with a vibrant welcome message for tourists.
