Future of Book Publishing in Latvia Depends on Publishers' Ability to Adapt to Digital Age
The future of book publishing in Latvia hinges on the ability of publishers to embrace the digital age, according to Saeima Speaker Daiga Mierina (Greens/Farmers). Speaking at the opening of a conference focused on the importance of reading and the role of libraries in fostering an educated society, Mierina emphasized the growing popularity of digital formats such as ebooks, audiobooks, interactive books, and online magazines, while acknowledging that printed books will continue to have their place.
Mierina highlighted the need for libraries to evolve and offer modern services that cater to the changing landscape of reading. She noted that libraries play a crucial role in supporting cultural life and social activities within local communities, particularly in rural areas.
This year marks a significant milestone in Latvia's literary history, as it commemorates 500 years since the first book was printed in Latvian. Mierina underscored the importance of language as a core value and identity of the nation, stating, "The printed word has enormous power; it can both build and destroy."
The conference is structured into three parts. The first segment, titled "Society of the Future - I Read, Therefore I Am," explores reading as a cultural phenomenon. The second part, "School Libraries - What Do We Expect?" addresses the current state of school libraries. Finally, the third segment, "Library as a Guarantor of the Success of Social Development in the Digital Age," focuses on the evolving role of libraries in society.
As the publishing landscape continues to shift, the ability of Latvian publishers and libraries to adapt to new technologies and reading formats will be essential for fostering a culture of reading and ensuring the continued relevance of literature in the digital era.
