Gabrijel Veočić Named European Boxing Champion in Poreč!

20-year-old Gabrijel Veočić has been named the Under-22 European Boxing Champion after defeating Bulgarian boxer Rami Mofid Kiwan in the final.

The Under-22 European Championship for boxers, which took place in Poreč over the past two weeks, could not have ended better. Gabrijel Veočić, a 20-year-old from Brod, won the glowing gold medal in the category up to 75 kilograms. Veočić defeated Bulgarian boxer Rami Mofid Kiwan by a split judge's decision, reports Fight Site.

From the very beginning of the fight, Veočić imposed himself as the more aggressive boxer. Kiwan, apart from his qualities, was a difficult opponent because of his counters, but Gabriel did very well. The Bulgarian boxer seemed somewhat reserved in the first round, while Veočić often hit directly at the front, through which he sometimes sought an opportunity to hit the rear right directly. As a result, all five judges scored 10-9 in the first round in favor of the Croatian boxer.

Kiwan woke up a little in the second round, but Veočić also went into a higher gear. However, it should be admitted that the fight was not particularly attractive, and Gabriel had several reckless attacks in which he inadvertently fell forward. The Bulgarian did not respond to the counters but preferred to draw with his legs; he avoided a more open exchange. The Swedish referee scored the second round in favor of Kiwan, but the other four judges again ruled that the Croatian national boxer was better.

Kiwan provided the best three minutes in this final in the third round, but Veočić was relatively equal and hit very well on the right several times. Still, all five judges scored this round in favor of the Bulgarian boxer. Still, there was not too much damage in terms of the outcome. Veočić showed maturity by bringing the fight to an end safely and was named the winner by four referees (29-28), while the Swedish referee saw Kiwan as the winner (29-28).

After the silver medal of Nikola Ćaćić and the bronze medal of Noa Ježek, Veočić crowned the excellent performances of Croatia national team members on the last day of the European Championship in Poreč. This gold medal is just further confirmation of the hard work of Gabriel Veočić, his father Pero, and all other members of their team. Read More...
