Guatemalan 2025 International Book Fair dedicated to Spain and Marta Elena Casaús
The 2025 International Book Fair (Filgua) in Guatemala will be dedicated to Spain and honor the local sociologist and historian Marta Elena Casaús. This announcement was made by Diana López, the director of the Guatemalan Association of Editors (AGE), during the closing ceremony of the 21st edition of the fair. López expressed gratitude to the Spanish embassy and Cultural Center for participating in this literary journey that bridges geographical distances through shared language and heritage.
Marta Elena Casaús, a prominent figure in fostering critical thinking in Guatemala, will be celebrated for her contributions to academia and her passion for promoting literacy and learning in the country.
López highlighted the significant involvement of the Guatemalan government in this year's fair, both financially and through active participation from President Bernardo Arévalo, Vice-President Karin Herrera, and Minister of Culture and Sports, Libby Gracioso, among others.
The 2024 edition of Filgua, dedicated to writer Francisco Pérez de Antón, hosted 425 cultural activities, including explorations of Mayan languages, Central American literature, and themes of migration. This year's fair attracted over 80,000 visitors, surpassing expectations from the previous year. The event was also marked by the presence of Miguel Ángel Asturias Amado, son of Nobel Prize-winning author Miguel Ángel Asturias, who was honored throughout the 11-day event.
