About the artist
Gustaph was born on July 5, 1980, in Leuven, the Flemish region of Belgium. His fascination with Eurovision began during his childhood. At the age of 13, Gustaph embarked on his musical journey, signing his first record contract when he turned 17. This young talent pursued his studies at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent, earning both bachelor's and master's degrees.
Under the name Steffen, the Belgian artist initially released music, debuting with his single 'Gonna Lose You' in 2000. Gustaph's involvement with Eurovision goes beyond this year's participation. He served as a backing vocalist for Belgium in 2018 and 2021.
About the song
'Because Of You' is a collaborative creation by Gustaph and Jaouad Alloul, a theatre producer and musician. While the song predominantly revolves around love, it is not directed towards a specific individual. Gustaph describes it as "an unapologetic love letter to freedom." Through this song, he pays tribute to the queer community, his "chosen family," which has been a source of strength and support throughout his life.
The musical style of 'Because Of You' takes inspiration from early 90s house music, incorporating synthesizers into its composition.
How Gustaph was selected for Eurovision
Gustaph emerged victorious in Belgium's Eurovision national final show, 'Eurosong 2023,' held at the Palais 12 in Brussels, securing his ticket to Liverpool. He placed third in the jury vote and second in the televote, ultimately triumphing over the highly favored The Starlings by a mere point.
