HCM City's public high schools are set to accept 70% of the total number of 10th-grade students this year
Approximately 19,000 students who were unable to secure admission to these schools will need to explore other options such as private high schools, vocational education centers, or centers for continuing education.
According to Le Hoai Nam, the deputy director of the department, over 109,000 ninth-grade students are expected to graduate from secondary schools this year. Out of these, more than 96,000 students have registered to take the 10th-grade entrance exam for public schools. The remaining 13,000 students have chosen not to take the exam and are seeking admission to centers for continuing education, vocational training schools, or studying abroad.
For the upcoming 2023-2024 school year, only 70% of the secondary school graduates will be able to attend public high schools. This means that there will be limited availability for those seeking admission.
The entrance exam for public schools is scheduled to take place on June 6-7. In addition to public high schools, private high schools, vocational education schools, and centers for continuing education will collectively offer 51,000 seats for 10th-grade students in the upcoming school year.
Ngo Thoi Nhiem High School in Thu Duc city has announced the highest enrollment capacity among private high schools in the city, with 1,310 available seats. Tuong Nguyen Su, the principal of the school, mentioned that they accept students from all over the country without requiring them to take the 10th-grade entrance exam.
However, the increased tuition fees at private high schools have become a major concern for students who were not able to gain admission to public high schools, as these private institutions often have higher costs. Many private high schools have announced a monthly tuition fee hike ranging from 600,000 to 1 million VND (approximately 25 to 42 USD).
Private high schools will be accepting online applications from July 3 to August 25.
