A study carried out by Revolut, mostly based on data from Eurostat and INS, shows how much money is given at a wedding depending on the country and the relationship between the guests and the bride and groom .
The year 2022 is one of the busiest when it comes to weddings, especially after many events were postponed due to the pandemic.
According to Eurostat, in 2019, the most recent year under normal conditions, there were 4.3 marriages per 1,000 inhabitants in the European Union , and Romania had one of the highest marriage rates in the EU, namely 6.6 per thousand inhabitants. Due to the pandemic in 2020, only 81,343 marriages were concluded in Romania, being the lowest number since 1946 and up to now.
Germans are stingy
In Germany and the Nordic countries, we can say that the guests are the most stingy when it comes to the wedding gift. This is between €30 and €70, and the family, bridesmaids and groomsmen give €100 each. In Sweden, however, money is not offered, but gifts.
In Poland, Ireland, Lithuania and Spain , guests offer at least 50 euros per person to cover the menu. However, the amounts can be higher depending on the status of the guest and can reach 200 euros. Usually, the minimum gift is calculated as follows: the menu plus 25%.
Romanians are generous
Romanians are among the most generous. The wedding gift starts from a minimum of 100 euros per person and can reach up to 500 euros per person, depending on the degree of kinship and proximity to the newlyweds.
