How to Delete Your Facebook Account
If you’re determined to delete your Facebook account permanently (rather than just deactivating it), it’s important to first download your personal information. This includes your photos, chat history, and other data. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to delete your Facebook account using a computer and web browser.
Step 1: Download Your Personal Information
- Log into Facebook: Open your web browser and log into your Facebook account.
- Access Settings: Click the down arrow under your profile picture in the upper-right corner.
- Go to Settings & Privacy: Select Settings & Privacy, then click on Settings.
- Download Your Information: Scroll down the left-hand column to Your Information and click on Download your information.
- Visit Accounts Center: You will be prompted to visit the Accounts Center. Click Continue.
- Download or Transfer Information: When the pop-up appears, click Download or transfer information.
- Select Accounts: Choose which accounts you want to download information from (Facebook, Instagram, Meta Horizon) and click Next.
- Choose Information Type: Decide how much information you want to download and click Next. You can select specific types of information if desired.
- Download Options: Choose whether to download your info to a device or transfer it to a destination, then click Next.
- If transferring, select the destination and schedule future transfers, then click Start transfer and enter your Facebook password.
- If downloading, choose your file options (date range, format: HTML or JSON, and media quality) and click Submit request.
Step 2: Delete Your Facebook Account
- Access Settings: Click your profile picture in the top right corner.
- Go to Settings & Privacy: Select Settings & Privacy, then click on Settings.
- Open Accounts Center: Click Accounts Center at the top left of the screen.
- Personal Details: Click Personal details under Account Settings.
- Account Ownership and Control: Click Account ownership and control.
- Deactivation or Deletion: Click Deactivation or deletion.
- Select Account: Choose the account or profile you want to delete.
- Choose Delete Account: Select Delete account.
- Confirm Deletion: Click Continue and follow the instructions to confirm your decision.
Important Notes
- Permanent Deletion: Once you delete your account, you cannot regain access to it. Facebook delays the deletion for a few days after the request is made. If you log back into Facebook during this time, your deletion request will be canceled.
- Messaging History: Some information, like messaging history, may not be stored in your account, meaning your friends might still have access to messages you sent even after your account is deleted.
By following these steps, you can successfully delete your Facebook account and ensure that your personal information is handled according to your preferences.
