Hungarian film about Kabul evacuation begins shooting
A new Hungarian film, tentatively titled "Operation Kabul," has begun production, focusing on the real-life events of the 2021 evacuation of Kabul. The film tells the story of Operation Shaman Shield, where Hungarian soldiers played a crucial role in evacuating 540 people, including 180 children, from Afghanistan as NATO forces withdrew.
Filming began in early August and is expected to conclude by the second week of November, with a planned release in the autumn of 2025. Zsombor Dyga is directing the project, which is being produced by Szupermodern Studio. The film received a grant of 2.8 billion forints (approximately EUR 7 million) from the National Film Institute.
The Hungarian Defence Forces are providing consulting support to ensure the film's accuracy, and the production also involves Sárkányok Produkció and the Media Service Support and Asset Management Fund (MTVA) as co-production partners. The film aims to bring the dramatic and intense events of the Kabul evacuation to life on the big screen, highlighting the bravery and efforts of the Hungarian soldiers involved.
