Romanian Film The New Year That Never Came Awarded At The Venice Film Festival
The Romanian film The New Year That Never Came (Anul Nou care n-a fost), directed by Bogdan Mureșanu, has been awarded the Best Film in the Orizzonti section at the 81st Venice International Film Festival. This marks a historic achievement for Romanian cinema, as it is the first time a Romanian film has received this prestigious award at the festival.
In his acceptance speech, director Bogdan Mureșanu dedicated the award to the entire team involved in the film's production, which included over 40 actors. He also dedicated the award to people worldwide living under dictatorial regimes, expressing hope for their dignity, freedom, and humanity.
The film, a Kinotopia production in co-production with SRTV (Romanian Television Company) and All Inclusive Films (Serbia), explores life under a dictatorial regime, using six distinct yet interwoven stories to create a profound narrative about human behavior shaped by the long-standing fear of political repression. The film has been praised for its ambitious direction, sophisticated storytelling, and masterful balance of tones.
In addition to the Orizzonti award, The New Year That Never Came also received the FIPRESCI Award from The International Federation of Film Critics, recognizing its sharp political insight, exceptional casting, and narrative complexity.
