Mladen Kovačević's new film "The Possibility of Paradise" premieres in Venice
Mladen Kovačević's latest film, The Possibility of Paradise (2024), premiered on September 3 at the 81st Venice Film Festival as part of the "Days of Authors" (Giornate degli Autori) independent program.
The film, a Serbian-Swedish co-production, was screened at Sala Perla, with Kovačević, producer Iva Plemić Divjak, and cinematographer Marko Milovanović in attendance. Also present were Mirjana Jeremić, Serbia's Ambassador to Italy, and Jovana Dimitrijević, Third Secretary at the Serbian Embassy in Rome.
Set on an island in Indonesia, The Possibility of Paradise explores the tension between life's possibilities, centering on the question of which life path one should choose, with each decision leading to a different version of oneself. The film delves into the idea of earthly paradise as an imagined ideal, reflecting humanity's relentless search for fulfillment.
Kovačević, who also wrote the screenplay, collaborated with editor Jelena Maksimović, composer Rebekka Karijord, and sound designer Jakov Munizaba, among others, to bring this project to life. The film was produced by Kovačević and Iva Plemić Divjak for Horopter Film Production, with Elin Lilleman Eriksson from Swedish MDEMC Produktion as co-producer.
Following the premiere, Kovačević engaged in a discussion with the audience about the film. Known for his internationally acclaimed works like Unplugged (2013), Zid smrti i tako to (2016), and Another Spring (2022), Kovačević's films have been featured at major festivals including Rotterdam, Karlovy Vary, and Visions du Réel, and have garnered numerous awards. He is currently working on the docu-fiction Korio and developing the feature film Behind the Curtains, Behind the Trees.
