Irish team sets record with Ireland to Scotland winter swim

A team of Irish swimmers has become the first to complete the North Channel swim from Ireland to Scotland without wearing wet suits in winter.
Calling themselves the Walrus Swim Team - whose members are Niamh McCarthy, Declan Bradshaw, Vincent Donegan, Ger Kennedy, Colm Morris and Dave Berry - they group completed swimming to Scotland in under 13 hours on January 14.
The team members took turns in the water, each swimming in one hour rotations.
Swimming from Ireland to Scotland is believed to the most difficult of the seven ocean sea swims, which include the English Channel between England and France and the Cook Strait between North and South Islands in New Zealand.
The swim was supervised by the Irish Long Distance Swimming Association, which had imposed medical requirements on the Irish swimmers.
The swimmers arrived in Portpatrick, Scotland just before 8pm.
"It was great, but it was tough. Core body temperatures dropped as low as 28C, but we had our routine and full medical support. That all worked with military precision," Berry said, as quoted by RTE. Read More…
